Mark, Graeme and Dave A were recently thrilled to spend a day at the Kilmarnock Cluarankwai Dojo attending a Judo Supercoach event with a true Judo legend, Kosei Inoue - 3 times Word Champion, Olympic Champion and all Japan Champion!! Kosei was passing on his top ten coaching tips as well as giving a Judo masterclass including demonstrating his awsome Judo talent. The coaching team will be passing on the lessons learned in the coaching at PJC for the benefit of all players.
Grading news from Ratho - 20th Feb 2010
Once more, with the mist barely lifting and snow and
ice on the road, ten intrepid warriors made their way to the gladiatorial arena
known as the national judo centre at Ratho. This time there were no hic-ups.
Everyone arrived on time with licence to hand.
The team was made up of veteran players and first time
outers, all encouraging each other. Graeme McMorran was on the mat to encourage
each player before and after their fights, while Andy, Ian, John and Colin were
mat-side.
The majority of junior players were from PJC, so
inevitably Peebles V Peebles was going to be the order of the day. This is a
tribute to a club which put forward so many competition players..
First up on the day in his first ever competition
fight, Calum Grant took on the much bigger and improving player Daniel Madden.
Calum gave his best, but was overwhelmed and beaten by Daniel for Ippon.
Undaunted, Calum went on to two more fights against Ewan Millan and Angus
Cunningham, to be beaten in both. Still, this was an outstanding performance
from a player who showed great courage and heart in his first tournament.
Daniel Madden continuing in his winning vain had two
further fights wining by two throws in the second and a straight Ippon throw in
the third. This was a great effort on the day and a well deserved promotion to
12th Mon.
Ewan Millan, having licked his wounds from his last
outing came back in fighting mood, only to lose his first two fights then come
good in the third winning by Ippon, upgraded to 11th Mon.
Angus Cunningham, another near veteran of gradings
continues to pick his way through the battlefields, facing up to opponents of
much bigger stature than himself and never seems daunted by this – a true
fighter. Angus won his first fight by Wazari, second by Ippon, and lost his
third. Well done on an upgrade to 12th Mon.
Caelam Perryman had a difficult day, scoring a Wazari
in his first fight and winning 14 points. This was enough for an upgrade
to 13th mon (blue belt) which is a great achievement. However Caelam
has to work on his head going down when things are not going his way. A good
player in the making. He just needs to keep at it.
Drew Millan has progressed into the arena of the BIG
BOYS and didn’t he know it! Narrowly losing his first two fights he managed to
win in his third against Angus Olsen and gain 20 points. Drew is a true
competitor who takes on feed back and is always up for a fight. I’m sure we
will see him wearing a brown belt before the year is out.
Blair Ketteringham, on his first outing since breaking
his wrist (at Judo) was slightly tentative, and did not display the judo that I
know he can do. However this was the first step on the road to recovery and
again I’m sure better things are possible.
Angus Olson lost two of his three fights, winning the
third by Ippon. Angus is gaining in experience and picking his way through the
grades. This was not Angus’s best performance but he looked confident
nonetheless.
Cameron Madden was playing for the first time as a
senior, which meant that at 16 years old, Cameron was facing up to men 20-25
years old. His first fight was an absolute joy to watch, as he took a much
bigger opponent on a counter, laying him on his back like a baby winning by
Ippon. In his second the fight was much harder losing by Ippon, in his third he
scored a Wazari but lost by Ippon. This was extremely well done for a
first time out.
Lastly Sensei Mark Poole, gave us all cause to
celebrate winning his first fight by a convincing Ippon, only to lose his
second, then go on to draw his third and forth gaining no points from them.
That said, Mark is well on the road to his black belt, now only needing 16
points; i.e. one Ippon win and a Wazari will be enough. So come on Mark! Let’s
see that black belt soon….!
Just a word on etiquette, Ratho is the national judo
arena, no matter what you think of Judo Scotland, this is our home in Judo.
Certain rules apply to any Dojo:
1.Upmost
respect to players and officials. The Rei (bowing before during and after a
match must be obeyed)
2.The
referees commands must be obeyed and not questioned.
3.Under
no circumstances must outdoor footwear be wore while on the mat.
4.Under
no circumstances can food or sweets be consumed while on the mat.
5.Any
litter should be taken home or binned and not left in the arena.
Remember all the officials at the events are
volunteers and not paid cleaners
