Mons and Belts
The colour of the belt signifies the ‘grade' or the experience of the player. Children over 8 earn ‘Mons' for which they are awarded a certificate and a badge. The requirements for the Mon grading promotions are detailed in the Mongradesyllabuspictorialguide000 pdf (above) which is the Junior Syllabus, see here for more info.
Progression is based on:

Gradings
Our technical gradings for mon grades are held within the club and run in conjunction with Judo Scotland, the sport's national federation.  Every club member must hold a Judo Scotland licence, there are no exceptions. This provides a record of every grading your child does as well as providing them with insurance cover. As each new grade is achieved the child receives a certificate, badge and if appropriate a new coloured belt.
The Mon Syllabus is here or see the PDF downloads on this page.

From 1st September 2010 a new technical grading system exists for Mon grades (children) which no longer requires them to gain points at competitions to be promoted.  On reaching brown belt the young judo student currently has the choice of two 'streams' - the technical stream or the competitive stream. The competive stream requires 10 commpetition wins to gain black belt and there is a theory component as well.  The technical stream has a lot more theory required, demonstration throws, kata and randori.  Note that a Judoka has to be aged sixteen to be promoted to black belt.
This final system employed is under review and a decision on this will be made by judo Scotland in Sept 2012.  In addition to gradings there are competitions where Judokas can compete against children of their own ability, size, age and sex.

Being a gladatorial sport it is felt to be important for a judoka's development to have some experience of competitive fighting as this develops their Judo and demonstrates courage, however a technical alternative to fighting now exists.

Two grading fees are incuded in the Club membership.
