FAQ

Starting off
When you begin Judo we will lend you a judo jacket and belt to get you started, when you arrive ask one of the coaches for a jacket. You can wear jogging bottoms on your legs at first. In our club the coaches and helpers wear blue and the players must wear a traditional white kit.  Most new players buy their own kit from the club (at subsidised prices) when they join the club.
Note that Judo kits are much stronger than other martial arts kits so you need a proper Judo kit to take part.

New Kit
The club can provide good quality subsidised uniforms therefore if you need a new kit please fill in the form below
and bring the completed form and payment (cheque or cash) on a Wednesday night.
If you're not sure what size to get, spare kits are normally available to try on if required.
If you decide to buy a Judo kit yourself (outwith the club) then please ensure it meets IJF regulations and is white.
(The coaches normally wear a blue kit to make them more visible to parents, visitors and players, if you
have come from another club where players wear blue then please buy a white kit the next time it needs renewed)

The jacket is worn with the left side over the right side so that the badge is visible, girls should wear a long tee shirt underneath.
Long hair should always be tied back and watches, jewellry and anything else hard or metal must be removed for safety reasons.

Care of your Judo Kit
Personal cleanliness is part of the ethos of Judo therefore its important to keep your Judogi clean
because you are in close contact with other players and a smelly dirty kit isn't pleasant.

To stop it getting messed up:
  •  Change at the sports centre, or..
  •  Cover it with a tracksuit if wearing it to Judo
  •  Wash it frequently
  •  Air your kit after use - (dont leave it festering in your gym bag all week!)

Washing your Judogi
Follow the manufacturers instructions, normally these are:
wash with cold water the first 3 times. Then wash at 30° maximum, cotton wash.
Leave to dry outside or on a clothes horse near a radiator. Do not tumble dry.
Air your uniform after use. Regular washing will keep your uniform white. If stained use Vanish or similar in the wash.
Ironing isnt normally needed but you can steam iron it if badly crushed.
Its not normally necessary to wash the belt but if you do then use colour soap powder and dont wash it with the white kit.

Remember
Don't boil wash unless you deliberatetly want to shrink it.
Don't tumble dry unless you deliberately want to shrink it.
Don't use bleach or it will fall apart.
Don't dye it because dye runs when you sweat- (you could end up looking like a SMURF!)

Membership and Grading Badges

For junior members the round Judo Scotland badge should be sewn to the left breast.  The Mon grade badges should be sewn next to the manufacturers badge on the lower left of the jacket in a column as per the picture below. Avoid putting any badges where the jacket is gripped during Judo.  Only the official badges provided by the club should be worn.  Please make sure badges are sewn on securely as they need to withstand the rough and tumble of Judo.

The Japanese term for a judo uniform is Judogi
(pronounced Judo-Gee)
